What are phthalates

Phthalates are used in plastics to hold in moisture and keep the plastic food container or other product flexible. These are feminizing chemicals and endocrine disruptors used in everything from food containers to medical devices to children’s toys. Phthalates are now so ubiquitous in our households that most people are exposed to them every day. The CDC even says that over 90% of the population is now exposed to these substances. The body breaks them down as fast as it can but they are still commonly detected in urine, breast milk and blood samples. Phthalates are known to cause thyroid trouble, sex hormone imbalances, early puberty, sperm damage, breast cancer and an increased risk for asthma.
