Shivering the fat away

White fat is the unhealthy storage fat that is on the inside of your body. Brown fat is the energy converting fat that turns into energy much more efficiently than white fat. Researchers are finding that both shivering and regular moderate exercise help convert the bad-for-you white fat into energy-burning brown fat. It turns out that fat and muscle communicate with each with hormones to convert white fat cells into brown fat cells to protect us against cold. Up to 15 minutes of shivering actually results in conversions equal to a whole hour of moderate exercise. White fat conversion into brown fat can help protect against diabetes, obesity and fatty liver. Higher levels of brown fat bring lower glucose levels in humans.
