Rise and shine, it’s weight-loss time

Early to rise and shine helps weight loss! Bright morning light is scientifically linked to weight and body mass index (BMI). Actually, any length of exposure to bright light during the day helps weight management, but early morning light exposure to sunshine’s bright light brings a significantly lower BMI for people than those who had most of their light exposure later in the day. The influence of morning light exposure on body weight is independent of physical activity levels, caloric intake, sleep timing, and even age and accounts for some 20% of a person’s BMI. Early morning light synchronizes the internal body clock and circadian rhythms, to in turn regulate energy balance. About 20 to 30 minutes of morning light around 8 am is enough to affect BMI. When you don’t have sufficient light at the appropriate time of day, it causes dysregulation of the body clock that alters metabolism and can lead to weight gain.
