Pet Smarts

Give your heart to your pet! No, really. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US but having a pet, especially a dog, has been found to lower heart disease risk and associated factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and even diabetes. In general, people with dogs are physically more active than non-owners. The reason cats don’t score as high as dogs is that not many people walk their cats. Some dog owners have dogs that walk them. People who walk their dogs actually weigh less than non-owners do. Walking aside, pets provide comfort, encouragement and motivation. Pets also have a positive effect on the body’s reaction to stress.
