Nasty, nasty infant formulas

Most infant formulas are based in cow’s milk that has to be severely modified before a baby can survive drinking it. First, the protein and mineral content are lowered and then the carbohydrate content increased by adding some form of sugar. Milk fat cannot be digested by infants so it is removed and substituted with vegetable, animal or mineral fats. Missing vitamins and trace elements are then added, but never in a complete and easily digestible form. So, even though a formula says it is ‘nutritionally complete’ the nutrients are not usable for the infant. Infant formulas are basically nasty tasting and any self-respecting infant wouldn’t eat it – even if starving. To overcome discerning taste buds, many formulas are highly sweetened with lactose, fructose, glucose (AKA dextrose) and maltodextrose but still labeled ‘sucrose free’. Let’s not even think about the feminizing plasticizers and deadly GMO products that are in formulas…
