Love is in the air!

The smell of love is in the air for Valentine’s Day! Pheromones are almost imperceptible scents that influence sexual attraction and communicate reproductive quality. This magical scent actually exudes from our immune system to announce and excite sexual availability. A 2002 study found that women prefer the scent of a man with genes only somewhat similar to their own and do not prefer the scent of nearly identical genes or of the totally dissimilar man. We each have more than 1,000 olfactory genes as compared to approximately 300 eye photoreceptor genes.  So, the nose has it over the eyes! Pheromones have been avidly researched by perfume manufacturers looking for the one scent that drives the opposite sex wild.
