Laughing it up

Take a deep breath. OK now, smile. Laugh a little. Congratulations, you just dropped your stress-related cortisol levels. You can also improve your memory the same way. Stress takes its toll on the body, mood, and mind and as we grow older. Stress also contributes to a number of health problems, including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and memory loss to name a few. The latest research shows that the stress hormone cortisol damages neurons in the brain to affect both memory and learning ability. Researchers have now shown watching a 20-minute funny video significantly decreased in cortisol concentrations among both well and sick people. These video-watchers also improved in all areas of the memory assessment, but with the sick-folk, there was a dramatic benefit in cortisol level changes. Laughter really is the best medicine!
