Growing older – or not

Remember your last class reunion? Why is it that some of your peers look 10 years older than you but some look 10 years younger? One of the factors, according to researchers, is environmental differences from one person to the next in exposure to harmful substances such as chemicals like benzene, cigarette smoke, heavy metals, and even stress. These environmental toxins go by the scientific name of ‘gerontogens’ – environmental factors that affect aging. One of the strongest gerontogens out there is chemotherapy cancer treatment, which ages the body unbelievably fast. Researchers are developing clinical uses for gerontogenic molecular tests for anti-aging treatments. Just by identifying and avoiding gerontogens, we can influence aging, health status and life expectancy for ourselves.

You gotta be nice to that old body.
