Going, going, gone – green

Green cemeteries are now vogue. No, not the green of grass littered with daisies – the green of the carbon footprint when you are buried. So wrap me in a blanket and shovel the dirt over me because I really don’t need a fancy metal casket, embalming to keep the decay away and a concrete box to keep the earth from collapsing in me. This is already a dream-come-true in one Washington, D.C. cemetery that has been certified as a “Hybrid Service Provider from the Green Burial Council.” Green burials have actually been going on for years with pre-plans being sold to baby boomers and other socially and environmentally conscious individuals. A green burial disallows any embalming or a vault. Green burial does allow for “eco-friendly” materials, such as a cloth shroud, wicker casket or plain wooden box without hardware. The only other requirement is that you should be dead first…
