Go ahead – eat your water bottle

How about an edible water bottle? Americans drink more than 73 billion half-liter water bottles every year, according to EWG.org. New food technology is now making it possible to eat your water bottle instead of throwing it away. This brain-child out of the Imperial College London is made from brown algae and calcium chloride to create a gelatinous, double membrane around water or other liquid. The new process is called sperification, where frozen water is encased in a completely biodegradable container. This new bottle resembles a jellyfish and the fortified outer layers compare to the skin of a fruit. Some people say they are more like breast implants… I gotta give this an A+ for innovation – even if we don’t ever actually eat the container, they will break down in the environment for a huge positive in the green.

Just what will they think of next?
