Fast food for the school lunch cafeteria

Did you know that 19% of high school cafeterias serve branded fast food daily? Further research shows that middle and high schools with a higher number of low-income students also have more exclusive vending beverage contracts than other schools. A full two-thirds of elementary schools had out fast food coupons to students. According to the FTC, food and beverage companies spent $149 million on marketing to school kids while they were in school in 2009 alone. So, you do your best to teach your school kid to eat healthy and then they get fed garbage and peer pressure at school telling them that junk foods are delicious… Junk food, candy and sugary drinks are even used as rewards and positive reinforcement for things like reading or doing well in school. What is the message we are sending to our kids? The goal of the fast food companies is to make a customer for life and they really, obviously don’t give a rat’s behind about your child’s health.
