Caffeine buzz

Decaffeinated coffee is here for people that enjoy the taste of coffee, but don’t want the extra caffeine. Keep in mind that there are several different processes used to remove caffeine from coffee and some of them aren’t very nice. The worst process steams and then applies the chemical solvent benzene to the beans. The “direct method” steams the beans and then rinses them with ethyl acetate or methylene chloride.  The “Naturally decaffeinated” process should use ethyl acetate derived only from fruit or vegetables – but you’d better check the source. Most processes today use water decaffeination by soaking the beans in water and then adding chemical ethyl acetate or methylene chloride (which is supposed to evaporate as the beans are roasted). Not sure what method your favorite blend uses? Give the manufacturer a call. FYI: Decaffeinated coffees usually retain a residual amount of about 3% of the original caffeine content.
