Breathing room from air pollution

One particular veggie packs the two well-known cancer fighters, glucoraphanin and sulforaphane. That veggie is broccoli. New research finds that broccoli also fights lung damage from air pollution. A daily dose of broccoli sprout juice helped the lungs expel significant amounts of the pollution chemical benzene (a known carcinogen) along with other lung irritants. Excretion of cancer-causing benzene actually jumped 61% in this study using broccoli juice. Air pollution now causes some seven million global deaths a year according to the WHO. Of course we need to stop air pollution now, but in the meantime, a diet rich in cruciferous vegetables (like our champion broccoli) can reduce chronic diseases like degenerative lung diseases – including lung cancer and other cancers.
