A receipt for your troubles

A recent JAMA study had participants handle receipts continuously for 2 hours without gloves. They were then tested and found to have an increase in urine levels of the endocrine-disrupting bisphenol A (BPA).  Exposure to BPA is associated with adverse health outcomes, including neurodevelopmental problems in children and both thyroid and reproductive function in adults. The biggest exposure to BPA comes through the diet and the consumption of canned foods. The paper connection comes through exposure through the skin from thermal receipt paper common in supermarkets, ATM machines, gas stations, and many other settings. Thermal paper has a BPA coating for the receipt printing process that is absorbed by way of the skin with handling. Even people with no BPA urine levels had it after handling thermal receipts.
