A real pain in the gut

The cells that line the lumen of the intestine prevent food particles, fungus, bacteria and bacterial products from leaking into the body. These cells are held together by “tight junctions.” Several things we do and eat can actually destroy these tight junctions to produce leaky gut syndrome. Gluten in wheat, rye and barley, opportunistic fungus (like Candida) as well as radiation damages and kills these cells bringing an injury that triggers an inflammatory response that further breaks down tight junctions. This process effectively opens up the intestinal lining and allows food particles and pathogenic products to leak out of the intestine. As long as we continue doing the things that damage our guts, our guts will only get worse.

It happens over time and we don't know it.
